The green, green grass of Wyoming is Western country alright. The state emblem is
a hat waving cowboy astride a bucking bronco, and his spirit lives on: open range,
rodeos and Country and Western dancehalls can be found pretty much anywhere you
go. The least populous state in the Union, with just over half a million residents,
there are nearly three times as many cows as people here.
Like the other Rocky States, Wyoming appears to have been inhabited for at least
13,000 years: stone projectile points associated with the ancient Clovis, Folsom
and Plano cultures have been found throughout the region. An eight-hundred-year-old
medicine wheel discovered in the Big Horn Mountains seems to indicate a continuous
history of medicine use dating back 7,000 years. Numerous Native American tribes
lived here when the trapper John Colter, the first white man to penetrate this far
into the Rockies, entered the region in 1807. He took back reports of thermal activities
in the Yellowstone area, which were dismissed as fictional.
During the early nineteenth century, trappers known as mountain men flocked to Wyoming
to hunt beavers. Fort Laramie, the first permanent trading post, was built in 1834.
The state capital, Cheyenne, was built in 1867 and named for the Cheyenne tribe.
When the Wyoming territory was organised in 1869, it became the first place in the
United States to allow female suffrage. The reasoning was that the enfranchisement
of women would attract settlers and thus hasten the process of statehood. A year
later it appointed the country’s first female jurors; fifty-four years later the
“Equality State” elected the first female governor, Nellie Tayloe Ross. Wyoming
joined the Union as a fully fledged state in 1890, just a week after Idaho.
A wealth of natural resources resulted in mining, especially of coal, oil and natural
gas, becoming the predominant industry. The world’s largest sodium carbonate reserves
are found here, along with the second largest uranium deposits in the US. Farming
is the other main concern: Wyoming ranks second in wool production and third in
sheep and lamb production.
The Great Plains meet the Rocky Mountains in Wyoming, creating incredibly varied
scenery. Grand Teton National Park is a series of sheer faced cliffs, with jewel-like
lakes set tightly between them. Nearby is the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, a snowboarder’s
Mecca. Fossil Butte preserves the Perhaps the most famous attraction is Yellowstone
National Park, which inspired the character Yogi Bear. The steaming rainbow-coloured
geysers are visual evidence that this is the largest volcanic area in North America;
elsewhere, wolf packs, bears and bison wander the forests and meadows.
The Buffalo Bill Historical Centre in Cody commemorates the famous showman who established
the Wild West Show in 1883. Cody, which claims to hold more rodeos than any other
town in the world, also hosts a yearly Stampede on July 4th. Other than Bill, Wyomingites
are kept so busy in their own backyards that not many of them have made a huge impression
outside. Dick Cheney and Jackson Pollock managed to resist the lure of the wild
but they are unusual.
