Moving to Wisconsin?

Nearly as many cows as humans call Wisconsin home; there are about four million of in this rich, rolling farmland. That’s why Wisconsinites call their state “Dairyland” – but there’s more to it than the huge red barns and silos that dot the countryside. The name is a French corruption of an Ojibway word, whose meaning is either “gathering of the waters”, “red stone place” or “great rock”, depending on who you’re speaking to: all of the interpretations suggest different aspects of the natural wonders that are to be found in the Beaver State. From the jewelled lakes to the dramatic bluffs, there are a myriad of wonders to be discovered.

People have inhabited this region for a good ten thousand years, the most intriguing being the Effigy culture that grew up around 600 AD. Members of it built burial mounds in the shape of animals, for ceremonial reasons that have been lost in the mists of time. When the Frenchman Jean Nicolet arrived in 1634, the Siouan tribes were dominant. He canoed through the lakes and established Green Bay on the shore of Lake Michigan. The French retained control until 1763, when the British took over. Their main interest was the fur trade: settlement was undertaken by French Canadians who crossed the lakes. Even after the Americans won the region in 1812, it was generally ignored: the catalyst for change was the Black Hawk War of 1832, when Indians from Illinois who had been relocated in Iowa attempted to return home but were chased into Wisconsin by the Illinois militia.

Wisconsin became a state in 1848 and settlers poured in, attracted by the lead mines in the south west. Agriculture gradually superseded mining; although wheat was farmed initially, the soil lost vital minerals and arable farmers moved southwest to Iowa. Dairy was chosen as a replacement industry, and scores of expert European cheese makers moved in. Concurrently, Milwaukee established its breweries – the city is famous for its beer. The city is now known as the “Deutsch Athens” and combines the down-home with the sophisticated. There are around six thousand bars but also a number of adventurous classical music venues: it also hosts a wide variety of lakeside festivals.

The most romantic area of Wisconsin is Door County, a spit of land that sticks out into Lake Michigan. Thirteen lighthouses and fourteen fishing villages make this coastline more reminiscent of New England than the Midwest. Hiking, fishing, boating, skiing and snowmobiling are all possible here: alternatively, there are a number of arts festivals. The area is practically untouched by modern American consumerism. The northern part of the state is a forested wilderness, heaven for nature enthusiasts. The highlights of this area are the Apostle Islands, scattered off Bayfield Peninsula in Lake Superior and the home of the gloriously named golden-shafted woodpecker. Surely this should be the state bird – in fact, they chose the humble robin.

This has tended to be a progressive place, which gave rise to major national social programs such as labour laws for women and children, assistance for the elderly and the disabled, and unemployment compensation. There is always a dark side, however: Senator Joseph McCarthy was a native son. He is very much an oddity, though – far more typical of their home were Harry Houdini, Frank Lloyd Wright, Liberace and Orson Welles. There’s a little more to Dairyland than cows, after all.
