Moving to West Virginia?

Life is old there
Older than the trees
Younger than the mountains
Growin like a breeze…

John Denver’s classic rock song notwithstanding, West Virginia is one of the youngest states in the union, formed when forty-eight north-western counties broke off from Virginia during the Civil War. Originally, the area was hotly contested by Pennsylvania and Virginia, so much so that during the American Revolution plans were drawn up for the creation of a new territory called Westsylvania. These came to nothing but the cold, rugged land to the west of the Alleghany Mountains was clearly different from the rest of the state; unable to support the huge plantations that made the east so wealthy; its population a mix of immigrants from Germany, Scotland, Ireland and the northern states.

A succession of laws that favoured the wealthy east infuriated people in the western counties: when Virginia seceded from the union, these counties voted to remain loyal to the Union and thereby gain statehood. Although many, including Lincoln, thought that it was illegal, wartime politics prevailed and in 1863 West Virginia was admitted to the Union. In 1866 the Virginia General Assembly repealed the act of secession and asked the Supreme Court to declare West Virginia’s admission as a state unconstitutional. This it declined to do. For decades afterwards, the neighbouring states argued the proportion of government debts that each should pay; the matter was only decided in 1915, when the Supreme Court ruled that West Virginia owed Virginia twelve million dollars.

In the latter half of the nineteenth century, salt and coal mining became the lifeblood of the state. The vast reserves were excavated by some of the worst treated workers in the country: the coal mining companies perfected the technique of building company towns, where food and lodging always cost a little more than the miners’ wages, thus ensuring that people could never leave their jobs. Meanwhile, the timber companies moved through the forests, setting up mill towns that were dismantled when the maximum amount of lumber possible had been taken from the area. These practices were the cause of considerable union strife in the late twentieth century.

West Virginia is still extremely poor and almost entirely rural. As the only state whose boundaries all fall within the Appalachian mountain range, it is also incredibly beautiful. Harpers Ferry, an eighteenth-century town that has been revitalised as an outdoor museum, is the best place to begin. Clinging to the rugged hillsides about the Shenandoah and Potomac rivers, it was the headquarters of militant John Brown. Trails around the town lead into the glorious forests that rival New England in autumn. The Shenandoah below is a prime destination for white water rafting enthusiasts. Further west, the New River Gorge is a magnificent river canyon where a range of outdoor activities are possible.

In the north, the Alleghany Mountains hold a number of spectacular sights: from the amber-coloured Blackwater Falls to Spruce Rock, the highest point in the state, the views are outrageously lovely. Elkins is the largest town in the region and a wonderful spot to witness the local traditions. In august, the Augusta Festival showcases banjo playing, blacksmithing, folk dancing and patchwork making: in the evenings bluegrass music rings through the hills and storytellers weave magic around the fires.
