Moving to Washington?

It is no surprise to learn that Washington State is named in honour of the man who could not tell a lie, the first president of the United States of America. What is surprising is that it took so long for someone to do it: Washington was only the forty-second state to enter the Union, in 1889; before that time plenty of states had been given far less obvious names. Like neighbouring Oregon, Washington was visited by Spanish, French and British explorers before America and Britain began to tussle over it in the 1840s. When the number of settlers streaming over the Oregon Trail became overwhelming, the Americans won the battle; in 1853 the Territory of Washington came into being, separate from Oregon for the first time in colonial history.

During the early years of settlement there were several clashes between the European arrivals and the tribes that had occupied the land previously, who did not appreciate attempts at religious conversion or the contempt shown them by the newcomers. The 1847 Whitman Massacre in Walla Walla, in which fourteen Christian missionaries were killed by Cayuse and Umatilla Indians, sparked the Cayuse War, one of the most notorious events of the history of the Northwest. Battles and guerrilla attacks followed cattle theft and aggressive expansion until the Cayuse were finally defeated in 1855. several other wars broke out in the area, which became so dangerous that even the tough miners heading for the British Columbia Gold Rush travelled under armed escort.

By the turn of the twentieth century, the state of Washington had a dangerous reputation in the minds of many Americans; wilder than the Wild West and so strongly socialist that Franklin D. Roosevelt's postmaster general James Farley joked in 1936, "There are forty-seven states in the Union, and the soviet of Washington." The war effort in 1940 brought the state closer to the rest of the country but it has remained leftwing in outlook. The 1999 protests against the World Trade Organization in Seattle comprised over 40,000 people, including organizations such as NGOs involved in environment issues, unions, student groups, religious groups and anarchists.

The three best known Washingtonian brands are Microsoft, Boeing and Starbucks, all of which are based in Seattle, one of the most vibrant cities in America. The state is also a leading lumber producer and has a strong agricultural presence. Commercial fishing naturally plays a vital part in the economy. Ever since it was involved in the building of the atomic bomb, the manufacture of munitions and aircraft has grown in importance.

The Cascade Mountains are beautiful but need to be approached with caution: in 1980 Mount St Helens erupted, flattening 230 square miles of forest and spraying ash as far away as Portland, Oregon. Danger notwithstanding, this is a major tourist attraction, where the lava caverns are as greatly appreciated as the flora and fauna they buried. The Cascade Loop is a 400 mile road around the eastern foothills of the mountains that passes through majestic countryside, offering a variety of treks. It is only accessible in summer months. The Puget Sound waterway tracks deep into western Washington, within it a collection of tiny islands. West of it, the Olympic Peninsula is home to Olympic National Park, which was created to protect the Roosevelt elk; as well as the pristine rainforest that houses the Ozette dig, which uncovered thousands of pre-Columbian artefacts.

Unsurprisingly, this is a place that has borne a lot of rebels: Ray Charles, Kurt Cobain Gary Larson and Jimi Hendrix all came from this part of the world. The innovation can be searing but surely it’s worth dipping your toes in.
