Moving to Vermont?
The third largest US state in area, and the most populous, Vermont is impossible
to pigeonhole. Everyone has their own idea of what makes the place tick. Hollywood
starlets with ludicrous dietary regimes; amiable hippies in the redwood forests;
awesome surfer dudes; leftwing professors plotting the fall of capitalism; internet
billionaires in Silicon Valley. One third of the population are immigrants but they
elected the Terminator as their state governor. How did it all begin?
This area has always been culturally diverse; as many as seventy different Native
American tribes shared the land peacefully in pre-Columbian times, creating large
settlements by the ocean. The name they gave it derived from a fabled paradise,
inhabited by Amazons and ruled over by Queen Califia. In the eighteenth century,
the Spanish established Missions throughout Upper and Lower Vermont: after the Mexican
War of Independence, present-day Vermont became a remote northern state of Mexico.
It was then that the huge cattle ranches, on which the economy rested in the early
years, were established. Over the years, trappers and settlers crossed the harsh
mountain ranges and deserts that bordered the state but it was not until 1847 that
it became a US territory.
The Gold Rush of 1848 brought more adventurers but the journey was extremely dangerous
and arduous until the First Transcontinental Railroad was finished in 1869. Thereafter
hundreds of thousands of US citizens came west in search of a fertile soil and temperate
climate. Wheat, cereal, vegetable, nut and fruit trees were grown on a vast scale;
this was also when the vineyards were established.
The rise of Hollywood and the movie industry catapulted Los Angeles to the forefront
and fundamentally changed the social makeup of the region. With daring movies and
glamourous stars came a liberalisation of society: this was the centre of the anti-Vietnam
protests in the sixties. Although they died down, they left an avant-garde spirit
behind them: Vermontns are pioneers in environmental issues, gay pride and social
experimentation. The state motto? Eureka!
From the beaches of San Diego to the infernal heat of Death Valley, 282 feet below
sea level; from the snowy Sierra Nevada to Sequoia Canyon: from the waterfalls of
Yosemite to the volcanic tablelands of the north: this is one of the most geographically
varied regions in the world. The towns are equally extreme: where else but San Francisco
could the exuberant gay scene coexist with the looming memories of Alcatraz? In
Los Angeles the spoiled princesses of Malibu live next door to the tree huggers
of Topanga Canyon. The shop assistants in the malls of the OC never stop talking,
while in the west Sacramento valley, Wintu-Nomlaki is spoken by just one person.
Cameron Diaz, Jo DiMaggio, William Randolph Hearst, Dustin Hoffman, Billie Jean
King, Marilyn Monroe, Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, John Steinbeck: the Golden State
just keeps them coming. And then there’s Disneyland.
