Moving to Utah?
Say the word “Utah” and people think of Mormons. The two are practically synonymous.
In fact, less than sixty percent of Utahans are members of the Church of Latter
Day Saints, although the history of the state is inextricably bound up with the
religion.
The first people to inhabit the marshes and swamps of the Great Basin area arrived
between ten and twelve thousand years ago but it is not until the Fremont and Puebloan
cultures arose in around 600 BC that we can see artistic and archaeological relics.
The Fremont peoples lived in pithouses and created intricate petroglyphs, and grew
maize and squash. The Puebloans, also known as the Anasazi, cultivated similar crops
in addition to turkey, and made turquoise jewellery and a variety of pottery. These
two cultures appear to have traded peacefully. The incursion of the Shoshone in
the twelfth century, coupled with severe climactic changes, pushed them west. By
the time of European expansion, five main tribal groups occupied modern day Utah.
The region was claimed by Mexico but no more was done: when the Mormon pioneers,
fleeing persecution in the eastern states, came to the Salt Lake Valley in 1847
the area was still unsettled. When the new settlers founded Salt Lake City, still
the state capital, they created irrigation systems from nothing. Access to water
was the most important factor; their president, Brigham Young, set out to identify
places where new towns could be established. The Territory of Utah came into being
in 1850; the name comes from the Ute tribe and means “people of the mountains”.
Appropriately, their motto is “industry” and their nickname the Beehive State. The
federal government was suspicious of the Church; in particular the practice of polygamy:
it was not until the Mormon leaders officially renounced this that the territory
was finally granted statehood in 1890.
Utah has long been a leading producer of copper, gold, silver, lead and zinc; more
recently, oil has also become a major product. Agriculture is another major source
of income, with cattle, dairy produce and hay the top commodities. This is the fastest
growing state in the country: in the 2008 census, the population stood at 2,736,000
people; twenty-two percent larger than at the previous count in 2000. This may be
caused by Mormon doctrine.
One of the Four Corners states, Utah is known for its natural diversity and includes
arid deserts filled with sand dunes as well as thickly forested mountain ranges.
The spectacular Bonneville Salt Flats, in the north west of the state, are aligned
nearly perfectly with the shape of the earth, producing an optical illusion that
makes the distant mountains appear to be floating on air. They are also home to
three yearly high speed car races. The Grand Staircase-Escalante Monument is a vast
series of plateaus: in it are found the Canyons of Escalante, where sandstone has
been hollowed into natural statues; Coyote Gulch, a river with high canyon walls,
natural domes and arches; and the Grand Staircase, a sequence of coloured rock layers.
In the centre of it all is Moab, an adventure tourism destination and one of the
few towns in Utah that stays open after dark. Was it the wild scenery that kept
Butch Cassidy an outlaw so long – or the fact that he couldn’t get a drink anywhere?
