Moving to Texas?
Nicknamed the Lone Star, Texas was an independent nation between 1836 and 1845 and
Texans still relish a certain separation from the rest of the United States. Some
say that its part of the South, others claim that its Spanish roots bond it to the
Southwest, but most Texans will have none of it. Although physically enormous, the
state is held together by shared culture, identity and ideology, all bigger and
better than everywhere else, of course! From its inherent distrust of government
to the absence of any unionised labour, the key theme here is independence. Whatever
you do, don’t mess with Texas…
Nomadic people roamed the mountains and prairies as long as three thousand years
ago, leaving pictograms behind them. Around 500 BC, Native Americans began to build
villages, farm and create the first burial mounds. By the time the first Europeans
appeared in the seventeenth century, over twenty different tribes shared the land.
The Spanish established a colony near El Paso in 1682. The French followed suit
in Matagorda Bay in 1685 but the attempt was short lived, succumbing to hostile
tribesmen within four years. Mexico then owned the territory until it declared independence
in 1836; in 1845 it became part of the United States but it seceded to join the
Confederacy in 1861. Finally, in 1865, after suffering defeat in the Civil War,
it became the twenty-ninth state to join the Union. Because of all these changes,
the flags of all six countries that have held dominion over the area are incorporated
on the reverse of the Seal of Texas.
Although it was always a ranching centre, leading America in almost all aspects
of agricultural production, the discovery of huge oil reserves in 1901 transformed
the economy permanently. The brash city of Dallas exemplifies the Big Money ethos,
even though there are no oil reserves nearby. Royalties from oil continue to provide
a large proportion of the funds for public universities in the state. Other valuable
resources include sulphur, salt, helium, asphalt, graphite, bromine and natural
gas. Texas emits more greenhouse gases than any other US state – if it were still
an independent nation, it would rank seventh highest in greenhouse gas production.
The Texan landscape is incredibly varied: from the swampy forested east, where the
Big Thicket Natural Preserve hides a thriving animal life, including deer, alligators,
armadillos, possums, hogs and panthers; via the steamy Gulf Coast in the south;
to the looming mesas of the West, where the peyote cactus blossoms in Big Bend National:
there is something here to fit any fancies. The gentle green Hill Country around
Austin seems the perfect place to meet another local animal, the cowboy. But you’ll
have to go south to Houston for the annual Livestock and Rodeo Show.
Texas has produced some fairly disastrous politicians: after John Kennedy was shot
in Dallas in 1963, Lyndon Johnson became president and led America into the Vietnam
War. Forty years later, George W Bush – one of the most polarising figures in recent
history – created his own Vietnam in Iraq. Fortunate, then, that the creative scene
is so strong: musicians from all over the world come to Austin looking for fame,
fortune or just someone to jam with. The rightly acclaimed Austin City Limits Music
Festival brings together 130 bands on eight stages for three days of fun. Performers
as diverse as Erykah Badu and Buddy Holly have emerged from the scene. Guess it’s
all part of the melting pot…
