By the time Tennessee became the sixteenth state in the Union in 1796, the green hills had already been the site of numerous conflicts. Home of Paleo-Indian tribes more than 12,000 years ago, when the Spanish arrived in the late sixteenth century it had been settled by Muskogee and Yuchi peoples. Possibly because of the European diseases that were devastating the population, or maybe due to the aggressive colonial expansion in the north, they were quickly joined by Cherokee tribes. The latter continued to menace the British well into the eighteenth century, raiding the new forts along the Watuaga River and collaborating with various rebel groups. In 1839, under President Martin van Buren, around 17,000 Cherokees were first herded into emigration camps and then set on a forced march to the Indian Territory, far in the west. Around four thousand died along the way.

Many Tennesseans were pro-Union and this was the last state to join the Confederacy. This was one of the reasons that so many major battles took place there. The Shiloh National Military Park near Savannah commemorates one of the most crucial confrontations, in which over twenty thousand men were killed. When Emancipation was announced, Tennessee was left out and no slaves were freed; instead they chose to escape. Thousands of them ended up fighting on the Union side. After the defeat, although quick to ratify the Thirteenth Amendment, the state legislature swiftly took punitive action against its African-American citizens, passing the Jim Crow laws that enabled segregation. During this period, the Ku Klux Klan was established. Further laws effectively disenfranchised poor white and black citizens through the requirement that a poll tax be paid; as late as the 1950s, politicians bought poll tax receipts to distribute to their constituents, who then voted as instructed. In 1968 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr was assassinated in Memphis; his tragic death was one of the turning points in the civil rights movement.

Relaxed Southern image notwithstanding, the Volunteer State is now largely industrial, the majority of its population based in urban areas. The most important manufactured goods are chemicals, textiles, machinery and furniture. This is a centre of tobacco production, and cotton is still crucial to the economy, although without slave labour it is less profitable than in the past.

Hot and steamy Memphis is the greatest attraction for hundreds of miles around. Perched high above the Mississippi, the city that gave us blues, soul and rock and roll is also the barbeque capital of the world. The bars and clubs are phenomenal. Then there’s Graceland… In the fertile central plains, Nashville, the capital, is better known as a haven for country and western lovers, musicians and fans alike. Dolly Parton and xxx both launched their careers here. Bizarrely, it is also known as the Protestant Vatican; home to over a thousand churches as well as seminaries and Bible publishing plants.

The Blue Ridge area of the Smoky Mountains is stunning, named for the blue haze that hangs over its highest peaks. Its streams and meadows, home to more than 120 tree species and 1,400 flowering parks, are the backdrop to a life that has changed little since the arrival of the earliest pioneers. In fall, the forests change from red to orange to gold in a display that rivals New England. Hikers flock here in their thousands but be warned – if you want to camp, you need a permit, and along the Appalachian Trail you risk bears wherever you sleep.
