Moving to South Dakota?
Ask an outsider to tell you anything about South Dakota and chances are they’ll
be pushed; however, this is home to some of the most iconic landmarks in America.
A subject of contention between Native American groups long before the advent of
the Europeans, this was the site of one of the earliest known massacres on American
soil. In the fourteenth century, the Middle Missou and Initial Coalescent tribes
tried to move into the area around Crow Creek. Clashes broke out, culminating in
a brutal destruction of one of the groups – history does not record which. Over
five hundred bodies were left in a mass grave.
By the nineteenth century, when American settlers began to infiltrate the region,
the Sioux were the dominant tribe. In 1858 the Yankton signed a treaty ceding most
of the land to the United States. They gave their names to two of South Dakota’s
largest cities: Yankton and Sioux Falls. In 1874, General Custer led an expedition
to the Black Hills, where he discovered gold. The lodes were found within the Sioux
Reservation but the tribe refused to grant prospecting rights to the colonists.
US Army troops were sent to quash their resistance and they were relocated to other
reservations in North and South Dakota. The white population increased quickly and
the territory was granted statehood in 1889. Ironically, the name of the state originates
from a Sioux word meaning “allies”: just a year later, the famous Wounded Knee Massacre
resulted in the death of over three hundred Sioux including many women and children.
Only twenty-five US soldiers were killed that day.
South Dakotans, whose lifeblood was agriculture, were affected very badly by the
Great Dust Bowl of the 1930s, which ruined several harvests: the resultant decline
in population continued until the 1940s, when the war effort reinvigorated their
fortunes. They were also helped by a return to the normal weather patterns of cold
winters and hot summers. Recently, the state has diversified: durable-goods manufacturing
and private services have evolved as the drivers of the economy. Tourism is also
a booming industry in the state, generating over a billion dollars' worth of economic
activity each year.
Most visitors head south to the Black Hills, which rise like an island from the
surrounding prairies. Their greatest attraction is, of course, Mount Rushmore, where
the faces of four great American Presidents are carved into the side of a mountain,
each over sixty feet tall. The country’s other most famous sculpture is just seventeen
miles away on Thunderhead Mountain, where the depiction of the revered native warrior
Crazy Horse is still in progress. Work has been ongoing since 1948 and although
the original artist is dead, his widow, children and grandchildren continue to realize
his vision. As if that weren’t enough, Wind Cave National Park comprises over one
hundred miles of passages etched out of limestone beneath the centre of the mountain
range. Bison and pronghorn roam the hills, which were also once home to Calamity
Jane.
West of the area, Badlands National Park is the state’s answer to the Grand Canyon.
What it lacks in size it makes up in sheer weirdness: a saltwater sea that became
a marsh, into which sank the remains of sabre-toothed cats and three-toed horses,
to be covered with white volcanic ash. Erosion over millions of years carved the
crumbling earth into eerie pinnacles, precipices, pyramids, cones, ridges and gorges,
in a gorgeous array of pastel colours.
