Moving to South Carolina?

The first state to secede from the union in 1860, South Carolina has long held individualist, some might say contrarian stances. It remains, with Mississippi, one of the poorest and most rural states in the US, unwilling to industrialise and seemingly unable to move on from its violent past.

Settled by English Barbadians in the seventeenth century, South Carolina quickly imported vast numbers of African slaves to work its wide plantations. Shortly after splitting from North Carolina, the leaders of the settlers embarked on the bloody Yamasee War, which seriously threatened the continued existence of the colony. Hundreds of settlers were killed and many towns abandoned or destroyed during the two-year conflict, which only came to an end when the Cherokee switched sides.

During the American Revolution, thousands of slaves escaped to fight with the British. After the war, despite being the eighth state to join the union, this was a centre of anti-federalism. South Carolinians wanted direct democracy. It is unsurprising that they were the first to agitate for the creation of the Confederacy. During the Civil War, Union troops blockaded Charleston and seized the Sea Islands, driving the plantation owners away and allowing the freed slaves to establish their own government.

Shortly after the war, the Ku Klux Klan began their terrifying crusades in the state. Despite the best efforts of the Republicans, the state had become a hotbed of racial and economic tensions by the 1890s. African-Americans, who comprised sixty percent of the state’s population, were all disenfranchised. The textiles industry seemed to be making everyone except them rich; after weevils destroyed the cotton crops in 1920 huge numbers of people started to make their way north to freedom and opportunity. The Civil Rights Movement was relatively peaceful on both sides here: nonetheless, the state continued to fly a Confederacy flag until 1996, when Republican Governor David Beasley shocked locals by announcing that due to its connotations of violence and racial prejudice he was taking it down. Two of the most rightwing universities, known as training grounds for fundamentalist Christians, are still based in the state.

Peaches, watermelons, tobacco and peanuts: all the crops suitable to the mild sunny climate are grown here. The only commercial tea plantation in America is twenty miles south of Charleston. Tourism is also booming.

Gracious Charleston, mired in French traditions, is known as one of the finest-looking towns in the US. Its historic quarter is home to rows of tall stuccoed houses, shaded by wide porches, or piazzas as they’re known here. Many of them are open for tours. Palm fringed streets and a dreamy Caribbean climate make this as romantic a place as can be found anywhere. The Charleston dance originated among West African slaves in the city before migrating via jazz bands to the ballrooms of Europe. On the coast, the swampy marshes and low palmetto groves, festooned with Spanish moss, of the Low Country are unique; they give on to fine beaches where visitors have no choice but to sink into the gentle pace, sit back and listen to the birds singing.
