Moving to Oregon?

A pair of sage bark sandals discovered near Fort Rock Cave dates the habitation of Oregon to 13,200 years ago, if not early. Putting aside questions of comfort and the miracle that they survived that long, we know that by 8,000 BC there were settlements across the region; by the time Europeans made their first visit in the sixteenth century there were at least ten different tribes living there. Nehalem Indian tales recount tales of strangers shipwrecked on their shores, who brought strange items such as silver vases. Despite various visits, it was not really settled by Europeans until 1812 when John Jacob Astor established Fort Astoria at the mouth of the Columbia river, as a trading outpost for his fur company. Ownership was shared between Britain and the Union until Britain ceded all claims to land south of the forty-ninth parallel in the 1846 Treaty of Oregon. Statehood was achieved in 1859.

Unlike many other areas of North America, the Native Americans welcomed the arrival of the Europeans, as they looked forward to increased trading opportunities. The initial effect was that imported disease decimated the native populations; later, when American interests came into conflict with tribal traditions, many tribes accepted multi-million dollar payoffs to leave their accustomed fishing grounds, moving to reservations that were often very far from their homes.

Today the most important industry is the wood and lumber industry, worth $3.3 billion a year; manufacture of paper is a valuable offshoot. In keeping with its hippie image, it produces large quantities of nuts and berries. Two of the twentieth century’s most famous writers, Raymond Carver and Ursula Le Guin, were Oregonians.

Oregon has always been a politically active state: in 1902 a system of direct legislation was introduced and in 1908 citizens were given the right to recall public officials by ballot. Anti-gay and pro-religious measures have been tabled side by side with drug decriminalisation papers, demonstrating a wide range of political thought that is untrammelled by traditional party lines. Appropriately and rather beautifully, the state motto is “She flies with her own wings”. The largest city in the state, Portland, is famously bohemian and embodies this spirit.

Easygoing by temperament, the people of the Beaver State are careful to conserve their environment and have adopted strict land-use laws and “urban-growth boundaries” around the larger cities. They have a wonderfully varied landscape to protect: bisected by the Cascade Mountains, which are home to four of the most prominent peaks in the US, the terrain varies from semi-arid desert in the south to rainforest along the coast, which is very nearly unspoiled. Crater Lake, the deepest lake in North America, is the only National Park in Oregon. No streams flow in or out of it. The Columbia River, which is one of the largest in the country, is the habitat of large numbers of salmon, although the population has been drastically affected by the construction of several hydroelectric dams along the river. Finally, the largest single organism in the world is found underneath the Malheur National Forest in the east of the state. It’s a fungus and it spans 8.9 square kilometres.
