Moving to Ohio?

In the run up to the Presidential election last year, Ohio seemed to be at the centre of the universe. Newscasters and pundits from all over the world tried to predict which way the Buckeye State – one of the places that is said to epitomise the US in all its myriad manifestations – would swing. Examples of Red and Blue behaviours were picked over like bones at a barbeque and millions of dollars were spent trying to sway opinions. In the end, Obama carried the state and the media melted away, no longer interested in the unique character of the “great place” that the Iroquois people named so long ago.

This seems to have been Ohio’s fate ever since the Europeans arrived. In the mid-sixteenth century, English and Dutch traders encouraged the Iroquois tribes to pursue the Beaver Wars against the Algonquin and Huron tribes; these were so-called because the main source of conflict was the animal pelt trade. A battleground for the French and the British in the eighteenth century, it had a few years of peace before the Civil War broke out. Producing two of the great Union generals, Ulysses S Grant and William Tecumseh Sherman, it sent twice as many volunteers to the Front as any other northern state. Thirty-five thousand Ohioans died in the conflict and almost as many were mutilated.

Thereafter, the state followed the “Rust Belt” pattern, expanding its economy rapidly during industrialisation, aided by the vast coal reserves in the southeast. Despite the downturn that began in the 1970s and continues to have a strong negative impact, the state still ranks third in manufacturing employment nationwide, with different cities specialising in different areas. Farmers also have a strong presence; dairy and sheep farms account for fifty percent of agricultural sales, while soybeans, grain and fruit are the major crops. Whether this will survive the current crisis remains to be seen. At present, poverty and unemployment are increasing at an alarming rate.

The humid climate is generally pleasant; although the south can become uncomfortably hot in summer there are some benefits, in the subtropical plants and lizards that live here. the main natural attraction is the Lake Erie Islands; green and pleasant with few inhabitants, they also boast a number of archaeological sites. Inscription Rock on Kelleys Island is carved with four-hundred-year-old pictograms. Serpent Burial Mound in Adams County is a relic of the Adena, who raised this ceremonial ground into the shape of a snake swallowing an egg. Cleveland, considered by many to exemplify suburban values, was long the butt of bohemian jokes. In recent years, it’s become a little more edgy: attractions range from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame to the booming underground rave scene. Columbus is a lively college city with some great museums, stunning Germanic architecture and a vibrant nightlife.

With eight US presidents to its credit, Ohio shares with Virginia the nickname “Mother of Presidents” but it could also be called the mother of innovation. Two of the world’s first astronauts, Neil Armstrong and John Glenn, grew up here, as did Thomas Edison. The arts are equally well represented: Doris Day, Clark Gable, Zane Grey and Toni Morrison are Ohioans. Perhaps most telling is the state’s most famous markswoman. Remember “Annie, Get Your Gun”? The woman who inspired it, Annie Oakley, was born in Darke County.
