The most rural of all the states, North Dakota is ninety percent farmland. Unusually in the United States, it has been since it was first settled. Several thousand years ago, Native American tribes made their way here: by the time Europeans arrived in 1738 the Mandan, Hidatsa, Sious, Arikara and Chipewa tribes were established in the area and the Mandans had built a sophisticated agricultural and trade network. Their position near the mouth of the Hudson River gave them a valuable advantage in dealing with British and French traders, who established a temporary settlement at Pembira.

A smallpox epidemic in the 1820s wiped out much of the Mandan and Hidatsa tribes, forcing them to live together. Forced northwards in the 1870s, the Arikara joined them to form the Three Affiliated Tribes. When white settlers began arriving in the late nineteenth century, the tribes were moved to the Fort Berthold Reservation, where they still live. Although relations between Indians and Americans have always been peaceful, it is still legal, if you are in a covered wagon, to shoot at an Indian on horseback!

Today the state’s economy is based firmly on agriculature: the baking sun contributes to North Dakota’s number one ranking in wheat production, with corn, barley and rye all gorwing well too. There are more sunflowers here than anywhere else in the US. a lesser known product is nuclear power: if it were to secede from the US, North Dakota would become the number three nuclear power in the world.

The Roughrider State is so-called because Theodore Roosevelt tried to organise a state cavalry to fight in the Spanish-American War. Roosevelt declared frequently, “I never would have been president if it had not been for my experiences in North Dakota.” Going there in search of spiritual renewal, he discovered what he called a “grimly attractive landscape”, whose clear skies, endless horizons and bizarre rock formations offered “perfect freedom”. At the end of his political career, Roosevelt retired to the Bad Lands, where he built himself two ranches. The Theodore Roosevelt National Park is the top destination in the state that covers deserts, woods and mountains. The Painted Canyon has been beaten by sun and hard, infrequent rain over millions of years into a kaleidoscope of colours. Further north, horseback tours in Wind Canyon are a sublime way to experience North Dakota at its best.

Further west, the Spirit Lake Sioux Indian Reservation is the site of Fort Totten Military Post – one of the best-preserved frontier military posts in the country. Every year, the Spirit Lake Oyate Wacipi Powwow and Rodeo attracts people of all tribes to dance, sing and compete for cash prizes. On the settler side, Mandan is home to the Custer House, where the ill-fated general planned his battles. In this state, the spirit of classic Western writer Louis L’Amour (a Jamestown native) lives on.

People are often cruel about North Dakota: one guidebook describes it as an “afterthought, somewhere to pass through”. On the other hand, this is the safest place in the US, with the best high school completion rates. Amazingly, for a place with more millionaires per capita than any other state, it is rated the friendliest as well. They must be doing something right.
