North Carolina is steeped in history. The remnants of the Ancient Mississippian culture, established at Piedmont in 1000 AD, were still there when the first European explorers came to North Carolina in 1540. In 1567 Captain Juan Pardo claimed the region for Spain, hoping to establish an alternative route to the Mexican silver mines. Native tribesmen destroyed all the six forts he had built in 1568 and Spain never tried to re-establish them – but this marked the first attempt to colonise the vast US interior.

In 1587, on Queen Elizabeth I’s orders, Walter Raleigh established two colonies on the coast. Both collapsed: the failure of Roanoake Island is still one of the great unsolved mysteries in American folklore. Everything appeared to be running smoothly when John White returned to England for supplies in the first year. When he came back three years later, there was no one there; all he found was the word “CROATOAN” carved into a fencepost. Croatoan was the name of an island to the south, where a friendly native tribe was known to live; it was reasonable to assume that the colonists gone there. unfortunately, foul weather kept White from venturing south to search for the colonists, who were never heard of again, although apocryphal accounts insist that the island people were far lighter-skinned than most Native Americans thereafter, suggesting intermingling. The venture became known as “The Lost Colony”.

Successful settlements were established in the seventeenth century and the area was named Carolina in honour of Charles I; due to disputes over governance it split into two in 1710. Initially a number of indentured English labourers arrived to bolster the workforce; as these petered out, Carolinian planters imported increasing numbers of African slaves. Tobacco was the main crop, followed by cotton. By 1860, despite Quaker efforts to persuade plantation owners to free their workers, more than thirty percent of the population was enslaved. Staggering though the number seems, it was in fact far less than in the other Southern states and North Carolina did not join the Confderacy until Lincoln ordered its army to attack its sister state, South Carolina. Many farmers in the north of the state continued to support the Union covertly.

After the war, when the Democrats regained power, they worked to regain white supremacy with it, passing segregation laws that were as repressive as anywhere in the south. By 1960 the quarter of the population who were African-American still did not enjoy full rights. This sparked the Woolworth lunch counter sit-in, when black students refused to sit separately to eat. They inspired a wave of copycat demonstrations across the South. In the aftermath of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 things changed quickly: by 1973 North Carolina had its first black mayor.

Today agriculture and industry jostle for position: this is the nation’s largest brick, furniture and textile producer; these are likely to grow in importance as smoking becomes increasingly unpopular. Tourism attracts $1 billion annually.

From the majesty of the Blue Ridge Parkway, which twists through the North Carolina Mountains passing beauty spots such as Chimney Rock, to the salt marshes and beaches of the coast, North Carolina’s scenery is stunning and varied. The Albemarle Peninsula is still unexploited, and the Lake Mattamuskeet Wildlife Refuge is an amazing sight in winter, when thousands of swans migrate here from Canada, while the barrier islands are otherworldly. Wilmington and Beaufort are both important colonial towns on the coast.

Much of the Tar Heel State remains unchanged since the 1950s, which makes it a compelling place to stop and let time flow by. That attitudes have moved forward is best evidenced by the 2008 election: North Carolinians voted overwhelmingly for Barack Obama, the first black president, and hope that the scars of the past will finally heal.
