Moving to New York?
People of the world, take heed: there is more to New York State than the Big Apple!
Beyond the soaring skyscrapers and manic streets of the world’s craziest city lie
around 50,000 acres of rolling farmland, colonial towns, lakes, waterfalls and jutting
mountains.
When the Dutch established their first trading post on the southern tip of Manhattan
in 1614 the region was inhabited by Lenape and Iroqouis tribespeople. The Dutch
called it the New Netherlands, and established settlements along the Hudson River
to enable the fur trade. Captured by the British in the Anglo-Dutch War, who renamed
it New York, the city quickly became a vitally strategic port, along the way hosting
thee seminal John Peter Zenger trial in 1735 that helped to establish the freedom
of the press in North America. The Stamp Act Congress of 1775 was the precursor
to the American Revolution: a number of important battles took place here. after
the victory, New York became the eleventh state.
In the nineteenth century, immigration and industrialisation transformed New York
City, vastly increasing the divide between it and the rest of the state. The opening
of the Erie Canal went some way to addressing the population disparity, with settlers
pouring into the central region from New England and Europe. Upstate New York became
concurrently a zone of burning religious activism and a centre of innovation. Meanwhile,
people came from all parts of the world to seek their fortunes in the Big Apple,
whose influence and wealth has continued growing ever since.
In the early twentieth century, many African-Americans migrated here from the south;
by the 1920s the city was home to the largest African Diaspora in North America.
The Wall Street boom was the other factor in the growth of the city, which passed
the ten million mark in the early 1930s. despite setbacks such as the Wall Street
Crash in 1929 and the economic malaise of the 1960s, New York has always bounced
back. Even the tragic attacks on the Twin Towers in 9/11 did not put this city down
for long, although some say it is less carefree now, irrevocably changed.
The major tourist destination is of course the city, which is appealing the freezing
winters and baking summers alike. Top attractions include the Statue of Liberty,
donated by France in 1886 to celebrate the American centennial; Central Park; the
skyline, best viewed from Brooklyn Bridge; and MOMA. Nearby Long Island is a classic
WASP area, best known for the Hamptons, a group of towns that cater almost exclusively
to the rich and famous. The Catskill Mountains and the Hudson Valley offer respite
from the intensity of the city: the Hudson River has a Rhinelike charm, with restrained
mansions lining its banks, while the maple and beech cloaked Catskills are wonderful
hiking territory.
At the heart of the state in wine country are the eleven Finger Lakes, carved out
by glaciers with stunning scenery. Gorges, drumlins and waterfalls are interrupted
only by quiet towns and villages, with the exception of Ithaca. Often compared to
San Francisco, but much smaller, this is the home of Cornell University and the
Taughannock Falls, taller even than Niagara. Further north, the wild Adirondacks
encompass laidback ski resorts, spa towns and the Thousand Islands (home of the
salad dressing) on the broad St Lawrence River. Finally, on the Canadian border,
you come to Niagara Falls itself. Who could ask for more?
