Francisco Vásquez de Coronado, a Spanish explorer searching for the fabled Cities of Gold, visited the region that became New Mexico in 1540. There may not have been any gold, but if he had been interested he could have found Acoma Pueblo, the Sky City, the oldest continuously habited village in the US, built in the twelfth century on top of a high sandstone mesa. As well as the Pueblo peoples, members of the Navajo, Apache and Ute tribes were living in the area. In 1598 the first Spanish settlement was established on the Rio Grande River; the territory was called “Nuevo Mexico” in recognition of its similarities with its southern neighbour. In 1610 the capital, Santa Fe, was founded.

Initially very brutal, the missionaries were forced back into Mexico by the Pueblo Revolt of 1680 and were not allowed back into the region for twelve years. Thereafter, they used gentler methods in their attempts to Christianise the natives. Santa Fe became an important trade centre, along with Albuquerque. After Mexico won its independence from Spain, New Mexico changed hands many times: parts of it were claimed by the Republic of Texas, while others were ruled over by France. Even after it was bought by the Union in 1847, little was done with it: the Americans saw the area as a useless wasteland. Other than a few mining booms and range wars – such as the Lincoln County War, which introduced Billy the Kid to the public consciousness – New Mexico was relatively undisturbed until it finally became a state in 1912. During World War II, it was the base of operations for the top-secret Manhattan Project, which built and detonated the first atomic bomb; since then it has housed America's premier weapons research outposts.

As well as military research, this area excels in the energy field; extensive experiments are conducted at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory. Further wealth is accrued through mineral extraction: uranium, potassium, petroleum and natural gas are all found in the state; as are copper, gold, silver and zinc. Whether mining, farming or ranching, the majority of people here work close to the land. Like the original Mexico, chillies, beans, squash and corn grow well here. The mainstay of the agricultural industry, however, is livestock. Another crucial source of income is cultural tourism: nearly ten percent of New Mexicans claim Native American descent and a number of the pueblos are open to the public.

A landlocked state, New Mexico ranges from rosy deserts to high snow-topped mountains, broken mesas lying somewhere in between. For all that the state flower is a yucca, there are vast forested areas in the northeast. The southern plains, however, are covered by spindly mesquites, creosote bushes, cacti and desert grasses. The roadrunner, made famous by the Disney cartoon, originates here; watch out for black bears as well. The White Sands are 250 square miles of what look like glistening white sand dunes but are in fact ground gypsum that has eroded from the nearby Sacramento Mountains. In the Guadalupe Mountains, Carlsbad Caverns is an area so riddled with caves and holes as to be practically hollow: the limestone tracery is said to be exquisite. Surreally, Roswell is the town where an alien spaceship is supposed to have crashed in 1947. From some of the oldest cultures on earth to the completely unearthly, New Mexico is a blast.
