Much mocked as the poor relation of neighbouring New York, New Jersey has more than factories, pollution and that infamous accent to offer. Seen only from the hideous New Jersey Turnpike, it seems to be an industrialised nightmare, Bruce Srpringsteens wasteland of smokestacks and parking lots with the highest population density in the US. However, beyond the concrete lies the Garden State, idyllic home to Walt Whitman and Thomas Paine.

New Jersey was originally settled by the Lenni-Lenape, loosely organized groups that practiced small-scale agriculture to increase their largely mobile hunter-gatherer society in the region. This society was divided into matrilineal clans based upon common female ancestors and organized into three distinct phratries identified by their animal sign: Turtle, Turkey and Wolf. The Dutch arrived in the sixteenth century and were soon joined by Scottish Presbyterians and Quakers: by 1775 the population was 120,000 and rising. In 1776 the New Jersey State Constitution gave the vote to all citizens, including women and African-Americans, who had attained a certain level of wealth.

Often referred to as the “Crossroads of the Revolution”, New Jersey was the winter home of the American army under George Washington. Several crucial battles were fought here, including the two battles of Trenton, and the Treaty of Paris that ended the war was signed at Princeton. The third state to ratify the Constitution, it was the first to ratify the Bill of Rights. However, it was the last northern state to abolish slavery.

During the Industrial Revolution, the economy, which had previously relied on a rather lacklustre agricultural sector, switched to manufacturing textiles. Thomas Edison produced over a thousand patents while working in New Jersey; his laboratories, which are considered to be the world’s first research facilities, created the technology that produced the world’s first electrically-lit thoroughfare in Menlo Park. Iron mining also became prominent: in the twentieth century this provided the basis for New Jersey to become a centre of war production. Throughout the century, it continued to be a place of firsts: the first Miss America pageant in 1921 and the first drive in movie showing in Camden in 1933 are among the great cultural legacy of this place.

Today, the best places in New Jersey are the smallest. Princeton in the south is an elegant college town, dotted with historical sites and home to the wonderful University Art Museum. On the coast, glitzy Atlantic City is as brash and bold as its reputation; while it holds huge attraction for diehard gamblers other people may prefer to visit the world’s first Ferris Wheel and then leave quickly. Further south, Cape May is far more appealing: the ornate Victorian buildings give way to pretty boardwalks and excellent beaches spattered with quartz pebbles. Nearby Wildwood is a classic gaudy fifties resort.

Pretty, polluted, frenetic and freethinking: perhaps the reason New Jersey attracts so much stick is because it encapsulates so many contradictory American stereotypes. Ignoring all the fuss, it continues to give the world icons, from the writer Paul Auster to today’s greatest diva, Whitney Houston. Don’t laugh at New Jersey – it will have its revenge…
