Moving to Nebraska?
Nebraska is something of a mystery, little known outside America and written off
even by internal travellers as a vast expanse of dreary plains. The name originates
from an Oto Indian word meaning “flat water”. French fur traders first visited the
region in the late 1600s but it was not until 1795 that the first trading post was
established, on the Niobrara River. Following the Louisiana Pact of 1803, in 1812
President James Madison signed a bill creating the Missouri Territory, which included
present-day Nebraska. The fur trade industry grew so quickly that in the 1820s the
US Army built a fort to protect Union interests. In the 1860s homesteaders poured
into the area to claim the areas of land that had not been set aside for the native
tribes. When the territorial governors petitioned for statehood, they tried to include
a clause in their constitution that restricted suffrage to white citizens: in 1867
Congress voted to admit Nebraska as a state provided that the clause was removed.
Even then, President Andrew Johnson vetoed the bill – this was overridden by a supermajority
in the House.
The nicknames say it all: The Beef State and The Cornhusk State both reinforce the
state’s earthy reputation. Cowboys still work the cattle on the dusty northern plains,
humming the state ballad, “A Place like Nebraska”. The sizable cattle and hog industries
have made Dakota City and Lexington among the nation's largest meat-packing centres.
Each harvest sees bumper crops of sorghum, corn and wheat. And Nebraskans are also
keen to point out that more varieties of grass, valuable for forage, grow in this
state than in any other in the nation.
The largest city is Omaha, birthplace of both Gerald Ford and Malcolm X and home
to one of the best zoos on the continent. Although it has a lively entertainment
district, no one knows why it is immortalised in popular culture as the name of
a popular variation of poker. Twenty-nine miles southwest of Omaha, the Strategic
Air and Space Musuem has two hangars of 1950s and 1960s warplanes. Another thirty
miles on, the state capital, Lincoln, has several museums about the history of the
state.
A majority of the landscape is unerringly flat, the roads stretching on into pinpoints
with barely a windmill to divert the eye. Carhenge, two miles north of Alliance,
is a welcome diversion. Created in 1987 at a family reunion, this is a rough copy
of Stonehenge, built of Chevys, Plymouths and Cadillacs, all painted battleship
grey and stuck into a cornfield at odd angles. Pop Art or eyesore, this is worth
the stop and will make you want to meet the family that came up with it, if only
to ask why. Further west, the hills of the Panhandle stretch on like a sea in unceasing
turmoil. In the northwest, near the steep crenellated cliffs of the White River
Valley, the Fort Robinson State Park preserves the memory of the US Army campaign
to evict the Sioux tribe.
Perhaps there’s something to be said for a certain monotony: Nebraskans have had
to be tenacious and imaginative. The richest man in the world, Warren Buffet was
born in Omaha; so, too, Marlon Brando, widely considered to be the greatest movie
actor in history and the most brilliant dancer of all, Fred Astaire. They must be
doing something right.
