Moving to Montana?

Montana is known as Big Sky country for good reason: the sky here opens the eyes as wide as they can go, dwarfing yet complementing the astounding mountains below it. Originally home to the Cheyenne, the Crow, the Blackfeet and the Kootenai, to mention just a few of the tribes that lived there, it was explored by the Lewis Clark Expedition of 1805 and annexed as a US territory in 1864,after substantial mineral deposits were discovered in the 1850s. Tellingly, the Treasure State’s motto is “Plata y Oro” – “Silver and Gold”.

The Battle of Little Bighorn, famously known as Custer’s Last Stand, took place in June 1876. The battle between a Lakota-Cheyenne combined force and the 7th Cavalry of the United States Army was a disaster for General Custer: thousands of Native Americans had slipped away from their reservations, carrying with them repeating rifles, to massacre the soldiers. They killed more than half the regiment but the attack only intensified army efforts to capture the Cheyenne: they were removed to Oklahoma soon afterwards.

Around this time, William Andrews Clark, Marcus Daly, and F. Augustus Heinze, known as the Copper Kings, began a passionate rivalry for the mineral reserves of the state, focused on the town of Butte, supplier of half the country’s copper. They dragged as much gold, silver and copper out of the ground as possible, buying up newspapers, politicians, banks and police in their efforts to control the area’s resources. The town filled with sulphurous smoke, which is still there today. The entrepreneurs simply moved their workplaces to Anaconda, thirty miles away. Eventually Marcus Daly teamed up with William Rockefeller to create the Anaconda Copper Mining Company, which would dominate the region for years.

The parched plains of Montana used to be buffalo territory: now they are covered in arable farms, producing wheat, barley, rye, oats, flaxseed and potatoes. Cattle ranches are also integral to the economy as well as the culture. Tourism provides the other main source of income but due to the harsh winter conditions – the lowest recorded temperature in the US, of -70º, was at a gold mining camp near Rogers Pass – visitors tend to stick to the summer months. The weather is extremely variable: in Lomo, the temperature once rose from -48ºC to 9ºC within a twenty-four hour period.

Glacier National Park, which borders Canada to the north, has some of the greatest natural beauties in the state. Within it are 130 lakes, more than a thousand plant species and hundreds of animal species. This is the centre of the “Crown of the Continent Ecosystem”, a 44,000 square mile protected area. Lovers of fishing will enjoy Fort Peck Lake, where a number of fossils can also be seen at the dam museum. For those who prefer human endeavours, Helena, the State Capital, is elegant and as cosmopolitan as Montana gets: the original Governor’s Mansion is here, as are a number of museums about the state’s history. Overlooking the Prickly Pear Valley, it is the birthplace of Hollywood stars Myrna Loy and Gary Cooper.

This could equally well be called the Football State: the list of NFL players seems endless. There are a lot of pro baseballers as well. Peter Fonda may have learned how to be an easy rider growing up here, and perhaps David Lynch got some of his surreal ideas from the crazy countryside around him. For a population of just under a million people, there’s an impressive variety.
