Moving to Missouri?

One of the Bellwether states, Missouri has long been considered to mirror the demographic, political and ethnic makeup of the USA as a whole. Its rural/urban divide is emblematic of the struggle between Red and Blue America, between conservative and liberal values. This is echoed in its culture, which carries hints of the Midwest and the South. Missourians did not pull for Obama in the recent presidential election: this was one of only two occasions since 1904 that it has failed to choose the next President.

Another of the French fur trading regions, Missouri was first settled in the 1720s and St Louis was established at the eastern end of the Mississippi River in 1764. Little record of the previous inhabitants has been kept. The area remained relatively sparsely populated until the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. In 1818, Missouri requested admittance to the Union as a slave state. Because of the need to keep a balance between free and slave states, this caused great controversy: it was eventually admitted at the same time as Maine, a free state, in 1820.

The early settlers brought slaves with them from the Upper South and settled in an area of flatlands along the Missouri River that enabled plantation culture and became known as Little Dixie. Further along the river, Mormons from the northern states and Canada began to establish townships. They were driven out in 1839. The people of the Show-Me State have always displayed a certain scepticism, which came to the fore in the Civil War, when despite their pro-slavery stance members of the legislature refused to join the confederation. This caused some bloody episodes, including the St Louis Massacre.

Recently, the nearly six million Missourians have focused on growing their economy, which is highly diversified. The service industries are the biggest employers and include a growing tourism sector. This is a leading manufacturer of transportation equipment, beer, and defence and aerospace technology, and the lead mines produce ninety percent of the nation’s lead. Like all the Midwestern states, agricultural is vital here.

Reflecting its divided culture, the landscape of Missouri is where forest meets prairie. The riverboat towns along the Ozark National Scenic Riverways are relaxed and charming. Nestling in the woods, large caves with interesting dripstone formations are found along the rivers. Wildlife and fish are abundant in the area. Another great draw in this region is Hannibal, the town where Samuel Langhorne Clemens grew up. When he left aged seventeen, he renamed himself Mark Twain, after the calls that the river men made to each other. Cosmopolitan St Louis produced one of the greatest poets of the twentieth century, TS Eliot, as well as one of the all-time great rockers, Chuck Berry.

In the west, St Joseph was the home of the legendary Pony Express, which delivered mail to Sacramento California by continuous horseback relay in ten days. Although it was a financial disaster, the Express made riders such as Buffalo Bill Cody into legends. Also in this town is the Jesse James Museum, which tells the story of the notorious outlaw. Branson in the southwest claims to be the home of country and western and offers a bewildering array of live concerts; Independence, nearby, is the home town of Harry S Truman.

The freak weather cycles of this region just add to the unpredictability: come to Missouri and you may be in for hurricanes, tornadoes and even summer blizzards. You have been warned.
