Moving to Massachusetts?
The bastion of East Coast intellectuals – some go so far as to call them snobs –
Massachusetts is a proud state that never forgets its own worth. This, after all,
is where the Pilgrim Fathers planned to build a colony that would be a beacon to
the rest of humanity, an exemplar of sober government along sound spiritual principles.
The American Revolution began here. Many of America’s most illustrious people have
spent at least a few years here, wandering the halls of Harvard. Without the Bay
Staters’ principles of clarity of thought and forcefulness of purpose, the history
of the United States might be very different.
The original colonists were English Puritans who had fled to Holland but were appalled
by the “licentiousness” of the Dutch. When the Mayflower landed at Cape Cod in 1620,
they named their colony after the tribe that inhabited the Bay Area. Smallpox and
malaria were rife; about half the settlers died in the first year. The rest were
assisted by Massasoit, under-chief of the Wampanoag tribe. In November 1621, they
celebrated the first Thanksgiving Day to give thanks for their survival.
God quickly came to be the dominant factor in Massachusetts government. Missionary
John Eliot was paid to preach to the Wampanoag: from 1646, villages of “Praying
Indians” were built around Boston as a ring of protection. Wampanoag mistrust sparked
King Philip’s War, one of the bloodiest conflicts in early US history. The war ended
with Metacom’s death: his head was displayed in Plymouth for many years. From then
onwards, it became fashionable to keep enslaved Indians as butlers and cooks.
In 1768, Boston was occupied by the British Army in response to attacks on customs
officials. Public outrage grew until the tea tax led to the infamous Boston Tea
Party. In 1775 Boston was quickly besieged by American troops. The British were
unable to break the siege and when General George Washington took over, they had
to admit defeat.
The nineteenth century saw widespread industrialisation and innovation. Textile
mills were pioneered here, as were power looms. In 1826 the Granite Railway became
the first commercial railroad in the nation. The structure of the school system
was also created here at this time. In contrast to the early history of the commonwealth,
during this period Bay Staters were among the leading progressive voices, driving
the campaign for abolition. The state continues to be very liberal: in 2004 it was
the first state in America to legalise same-sex marriage and in 2008 marijuana was
decriminalised.
As well as its historical sites, called the Freedom Trail, Boston has imaginative
museums and eminent architecture. Nine parks make up the city’s “Emerald Necklace”,
the preeminent of which is Boston Common. Half an hour north, the friendly city
of Salem makes plenty of tourism dollars from the horrific Salem Witch Trials of
1692. Its Peabody Essex Museum houses all the souvenirs brought home by roving New
Englanders. South of Boston, Plymouth, site of the original colony, is a must-see.
On the western edge of the state, the Berkshires are rich and verdant, their forests
blissfully untouristed. The Mohawk Trail ends here, although less bloodthirsty types
might prefer the Tanglewood Music Festival. Cape Cod is a favourite resort for Americans,
drawn by the lovely old towns and beaches. From stripmall culture in the Upper Cape
to the rarefied atmosphere of Martha’s Vineyard, there’s something here to suit
all tastes. Unfortunately that means it can get very busy. Cape Cod National Seashore,
protected from development by President Kennedy himself, is the place to go.
From John Kennedy to Jay Leno; from Louisa May Alcott to Uma Thurman: Massachusetts
continues to surprise. The place that produced the terminally miserable Sylvia Plath
also spawned a third of the Friends cast. And its motto? “By the sword we seek peace,
but peace only under liberty.”
