Moving to Maryland?

For an increasing number of people, Maryland is most significant as the home of The Wire. In fact, the seventh state in the Union was obviously unusual long before David Simon turned a TV camera to the streets of Baltimore. Founded as the sole Catholic colony in Protestant America, and named after Charles I’s wife Henrietta Maria, it attracted settlers by awarding plots of land. Although most of the immigrants sent by Lord Baltimore were Protestants, this quickly became one of the few areas of the British Empire where Catholics held the highest political positions. Religious freedom was granted all Trinitarian Christians in the Toleration Act passed by the Maryland assembly in 1649. After the ascension of William of Orange to the British throne, Catholicism was outlawed and all the churches burned down.

Historically, Maryland was part of the Chesapeake Colonies where planters cultivated tobacco as a cash crop dependent on indentured labour. Large numbers of African slaves were shipped into the region. Even though after Independence, many Maryland planters followed the examples of their neighbours in Delaware and Virginia and freed their slaves, it remained the only slave state in the North. It stayed part of the Union, but thousands of fighters did travel south to join the Confederate Forces and many families were divided. After the war, although exempted from the Emancipation Proclamation, the state legislature passed an amendment outlawing slavery. In 1867, it extended suffrage to non-white males. This was the beginning of a long period of progressive politics. At the beginning of the twentieth century, Marylanders were among the first to demand that government jobs be granted on the basis of merit rather than patronage. In 1902, the state passed laws regulating working conditions in mines, banning child labour below the age of twelve, mandating school attendance and enacting the nation’s first worker compensation law. The Old Line State became known as the Free State due to its refusal to outlaw alcohol. However, it was not one of the states to force the ratification of suffrage for women. In recent years, Maryland has become notorious for its political corruption, the poverty of its cities, particularly Baltimore, and high crime rates.

Nonetheless, “America in Miniature” still has a lot to offer residents and visitors. One of the most environmentally conscious states, it ranges from sandy dunes dotted with sea grass in the east, to low marshlands teeming with wildlife and large bald cypress near the bay, to gently rolling hills of oak forest in the Piedmont Region, and pine groves in the mountains to the west, all in a warm climate that ranges from balmy to stifling. South of Chesapeake Bay, the enticing back roads of the Eastern Shore move from the old-fashioned appeal of Chestertown to the crowds of two-hundred-year-old Ocean City. The seafood in this area is excellent – the oyster population may have declined but the prized blue crabs and the rockfish are still as sweet and unctuous as when the settlers first wrote about them. Assateague Island National Seashore is a thirty-seven-mile stretch of entirely undeveloped beach and marshland.

Annapolis is engaging and unhurried, home to the beautiful Maryland State House, the oldest capitol building still in use, a number of stunning colonial mansions and the US Naval Academy, decorated in Beaux Arts style. The Banneker-Douglass Museum has a renowned collection of African-American art. It might be a city in decline, but Baltimore’s closely knit neighbourhoods and historic quarters make it one of the most attractive East Coast cities. It has a magnificent waterfront, a host of museums ranging from black history to science and the National Aquarium, a world class attraction. Who would want to miss the place that inspired The Star Spangled Banner?
