Moving to Kentucky?

The Commonwealth of Kentucky was the first state west of the Allegheny Mountains to be colonised by the American pioneers. Although a hunting ground for the Cherokee and Shawnee tribes, there were no major Native American settlements in the area when James Harrod established Harrodsburg in 1774: this astonished the pioneers, who viewed the lush grasslands with their temperate climate as a slice of paradise. Much of the area was purchased from the natives in the Treaties of Fort Stanwix and Sycamore Shoals in 1775. Despite this, the Shawnees were unhappy about the appropriation of the lands and allied themselves with the British during the American Revolution. Settlers poured through the Cumberland Gap from Virginia, establishing the first towns along the Ohio River before moving south to the Appalachian Valley. In 1792 Kentucky became the fifteenth state to join the Union.

The contradictory nature of the Bluegrass State is epitomised by the fact that the rival Presidents during the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis, were both born here. The divisions between slave-owning farmers and the wealthy merchants who depended on trade with the northern states were deep: some might say that they still remain. Confederate Memorial Day, on June 3rd, is still celebrated by some Kentuckians. These rifts were intensified by the Black Tobacco Wars of the early twentieth century, when, as a result of the monopolisation of the industry, the tobacco farmers were forced to sell their produce at ludicrously low prices. A number of farmers banded together and refused to sell; those who did not join were terrorised by the Night Riders, a vigilante group that also fired several tobacco warehouses.

The Bluegrass Downs are the heart of America’s racing industry and the sleek racehorse galloping through the long grasses is one of the most enduring images of Kentucky. There are an estimated 450 horse farms in the area around Lexington city; morning exercise is open to the public at Keeneland Racetrack. Further out, the meadows give way to the Knobs – striking low outcrops that are shrouded in trees. To the east, the steep slopes, narrow valleys and sandstone cliffs of Daniel Boone National Park commemorated one of America’s most mythologized trappers. Home to migrating red deer and bison, this area conceals the stunning Red River Gorge. It’s also where “Colonel” Harland Sanders opened his first restaurant in 1940: this would become the Kentucky Fried Chicken empire.

Louisville is a manufacturing giant in the centre of the state. Home of the Kentucky Derby, it also produces a third of America’s bourbon whisky. It has excellent public parks: native son Muhammad Ali always did his early morning training in Chicksaw Park. Nearby is Mammoth Cave National Park, whose underground geological formations include a bewildering display of stalagmites and stalactites, a huge cascade of flowstone known as Frozen Niagara, and deep Echo River, which is populated by a unique species of blind colourless fish. Other popular destinations include Owensboro, home of the International Bar-B-Q Festival and the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green. The state is renowned for its theatre and has produced some of the most important actors of recent years, including Johnny Depp and George Clooney.

Eternally caught between the cultural rhythms of the South, the Midwest and Appalachia, Kentucky has created a unique identity that is somehow typically American.
