Forever associated with a small girl in a gingham dress who carried a dog called Toto, Kansas has a darker history than its wholesome image would suggest. Historically, the area was home to large numbers of nomadic Native Americans who hunted bison. Claimed by France but ignored until it was bought by the Union in 1803, it was only settled by European Americans in 1827, when Fort Leavenworth was established. The pace of settlement accelerated in the 1850s, in the midst of political wars over the slavery issue. The Kansas-Nebraska Law of 1854 officially opened the region to settlement: abolitionist Free-Staters from New England and pro-slavery settlers from neighbouring Missouri rushed to the territory to argue whether Kansas would become a free state or a slave state. The skirmishes that ensued earned Kansas the nickname “The Bleeding State”.

After it was admitted to the United States in 1861, the violence abated, and African-Americans began to establish colonies in the state. At the same time, the Chisholm Trail was opened and the Wild West era began for Kansas. Wild Bill Hickok, Bat Masterson and Wyatt Earp all worked as lawmen in the region and Dodge City, immortalised in the long running TV and radio drama Gunsmoke, sprang up as a wild cowboy town. Cowboy violence became such a serious problem that in 1881 the state legislature passed a law prohibiting the sale and consumption of alcohol.

In recent years, it is best known as the heart of Bible Belt country, a bastion of conservatism and traditional family values. The local school board was one of the first to remove evolution from the curriculum. Although it is called the breadbasket of the nation, the fields of golden stalks sway only in the west of the state; elsewhere, rural poverty has prompted an exodus to the cities. An estimated 6,000 towns are now ghost towns. Nonetheless, wheat fields, oil-well derricks, herds of cattle and grain-storage elevators remain the chief features of the flat Kansas horizon. As more and more of the 2,750,000 residents move away from the land, agriculture is losing its grip over the job market; oil and gas production, the aeronautic industry and machinery are becoming more important to the region.

The wagon ruts of the Santa Fe Trail that opened traffic between Missouri and Santa Fe can still be seen on the high prairies. Further east, where the landscape begins to undulate, the city of Lawrence is artsy and attractive, while the Little House on the Prairie historic site can be found to the south. Inevitably, there is also a Wizard of Oz museum, in Wamego; more unexpected is the world-renowned Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center in Hutchinson.

The most famous Kansan is undoubtedly President Dwight Eisenhower: you can visit the house where he grew up in Abilene. All that space seems to inspire scientists: two Nobel Prize winners since 2000 is an impressive tally. More than anything, Kansas’ state song inspires affection.
