Moving to Iowa?
“I come from Des Moines. Someone had to.” In his bestselling travel memoirs, Iowan
Bill Bryson has characterised his home state as broad, flat, good-natured and a
little bit dull. He calls it the purtiest place in America; albeit short on outstanding
natural features, the rolling golden cornfields and endless horizons give this Midwestern
state an undeniable charm and serenity.
Iowa is named for the Ioway Indians who were its original inhabitants. The French
were taken there by members of the Sac and Fox tribes but American settlers did
not arrive until 1833, after the Black Hawk War during which many natives were hunted
down and massacred. With the land clear, people started coming south from Illinois
and north from Missouri. In 1846 it became the twenty-ninth state in the Union.
The settlers stayed out of the Civil War, sending food but not many troops to Lincoln’s
aid; a position that would become familiar in the succeeding years. Even during
the lean years of the Great Depression and the Second World War, Iowans enjoyed
relative prosperity. Although generally ignored, Iowa becomes the focus of much
attention every four years when the presidential caucuses roll around. In 2008 it
was the overwhelming support of Iowans that put Barack Obama on the road to the
presidency.
Today Iowa produces a tenth of America’s food, a staggering quantity. As well as
the corn that is emblematic of it, the Hawkeye State leads the nation in soybean
and hog production and comes in third in livestock sales. Despite the agricultural
image, manufacturing is even more significant for the three million inhabitants:
major industries are machinery production and printing and publishing. Iowa's forests
produce hardwood lumber, particularly walnut, and its mineral products include cement,
limestone, sand, gravel, gypsum and coal.
The weather provides some unwelcome excitement: although the humid contental climate
is not too extreme, this is prime tornado country. Spring is a particularly lethal
time of year, but there is an average of thirty-seven throughout the year. Twelve
people were killed by tornados in 2008, which saw 105 of the vicious twisters come
through.
Tourist attractions are few and far between: the most popular destination is the
german enclave of the Amara colonies. The seven prosperous villages were founded
in 1855 by the Community of True Inspiration, a group of pacifist German refugees
who believed that God spoke through prophets – themselves, for example – rather
than ordained ministers. The maligned Des Moines is home to the beautiful Capitol
Building and is best known for being the place where Ronald Reagan began his career:
he was a sports caster for Radio WHO. Markedly different to the rest of the state,
the Driftless Area of northeast Iowa is starkly beautiful, with steep hills and
deep valleys, checked with forest and terraced fields. Effigy Mounds National Monument
in Allamakee and Clayton Counties has the largest assemblage of animal-shaped prehistoric
mounds in the world. Finally, the small town of Winterset is not only the birthplace
of cowboy movie star John Wayne; it also provided the inspiration and sets for The
Bridges of Madison County.
