Moving to Indiana?
The smallest state west of the Appalachian Mountains, Indiana has a chequered history.
Inhabited for over 10,000 years, it was home to an advanced Mississippian culture
that flourished from 900 AD for several hundred years, building large cities and
massive earthworks, before abruptly vanishing in the fifteenth century. The Angel
Mounds State Historic Site was the home of a chieftain and is one of the best preserved
Native American sites. Why it was abandoned is still the subject of conjecture.
French explorers were the first to claim the land in the late seventeenth century.
It passed briefly to the British in 1763 before becoming fully American after the
War of Independence. Admitted as the nineteenth state of the Union in 1816, its
government rapidly began an ambitious expansion programme, hoping to transform Indiana
from a frontier into a thriving, developed state. The construction of roads, schools,
canals and railways nearly bankrupted them but increased land and produced value
fourfold. Attracted by its wealth and modernity, settlers came in droves from the
South, bringing large numbers of slaves with them. Thousands rioted when drafted
into the Union side in the Civil War.
No one is quite sure why Indianans are called “Hoosiers” – a number of stories have
been woven around the name. Sadly, the most likely is also the least romantic: it’s
said that when the Ohio State Falls were being constructed in the 1820s, contractor
Samuel Hoosier gave employment preference to people living on the Indiana side of
the Ohio River. Since that time, it has developed as a strongly industrial state,
initially specialising in automobiles before turning to pharmaceuticals in the 1970s.
The grimy steel mills have scarred the once-beautiful landscape, with the result
that the area is often bypassed by tourists. There are, however, twenty-four state
parks. Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore runs for twenty-five miles along the southeastern
shore of Lake Michigan, of which fifteen miles are beaches, all ideal for outdoor
sports. Over 350 bird species make their home there and the park has one of the
most diverse plant communities of any area in the States. It is unique in that Arctic
and desert plants are found in close proximity to each other. In the south of the
state, Wyandotte Cave has many miles of beautiful underground passages, where unusual
bats fly around the world’s tallest stalagmite.
Built on a tract of barely inhabited marshes in 1821, Indianapolis has been the
state capital ever since. It is a sports haven, home to the Pacers and the Colts,
and there are several world class stadiums. Every May, the Indianapolis 500 Car
Race brings a touch of glamour to the city. Bloomington, forty-five miles away,
holds a fine international art collection at the Indiana University Art Museum.
Extreme weather watchers might enjoy a vacation in this state: although the hot
humid summers can be very pleasant, this is a centre of tornado activity that has
been severely affected by a number of outbreaks.
Famous Indianans include the fashion designer Bill Blass, Michael Jackson, Cole
Porter and Carole Lombard. The best known is of course James Dean – perhaps growing
up here was enough to turn him into a rebel.
