Humans may have been present in Idaho for as long as 14,500 years. Excavations at Wilson Butte Cave near Twin Falls have uncovered arrowheads that are among the oldest human traces in North America. Beyond this, we know little: the Nez Perce and the Northern and Western Shoshone were living in the region when the Europeans arrived but their history is not recorded.

The Lewis and Clark Expedition of 1806 explored the area, which was then part of the Oregon country; the explorers declared that traversing the bewildering labyrinth of sharp peaks and wild waterways of Central Idaho had been the most difficult part of their travels. It remained a subject of dispute between the US and Britain until the Oregon Treaty of 1846 awarded the land to the US. The first permanent white settlement was established by the Mormons in Franklin in 1860 and the territory was created in the 1860s. It is the only US state whose name is the result of a hoax: an eccentric lobbyist called George M Willing suggested “Idaho”, claiming that it was a Shoshone word for “gem of the mountains”. He later admitted that he had made it up, but the name stuck.

The settlers had skirmishes with the Shoshone throughout the 1860s, the worst of which was the 1863 Bear River Massacre. Large numbers of Shoshone people were killed, while 297 US Army soldiers died. This encounter opened south-eastern Idaho to further Mormon expansion. They installed irrigation systems in the fertile southern area, which are still used today and can be thanked for the state licence plate motto, “Famous Potatoes”. Idaho achieved statehood on July 3 1890, the forty-third state to do so. That same year, the State of Idaho passed a law excluding any person, monogamist or polygamist, who subscribed to Mormon doctrines.

Over the last century the focus of state activities has shifted from mining to agriculture and tourism. The state is one of the most sparsely populated in the country, with just over one and a half million people to 83,600 square miles of land. (This includes around 17,000 Nez Perce Indians who inhabit a 1,200 square mile reservation in the north of the state.) Isolated by nature, it remains contrarian and far from the mainstream of US culture. Some notorious Nazi sympathisers have been Idahoans: they are countered by such luminaries as Ernest Hemingway and Ezra Pound.

The rugged landscape includes some of the largest unspoiled areas of the US. a Rocky Mountain state, Idaho has abundant natural resources: the Shoshone Falls, which falls from an even greater height than Niagara Falls; Hells Canyon, the deepest river gorge in the country; wildly beautiful Snake River; the spectacular panoramas of the Sawtooth Mountains; and the glacial lakes of the north. The Craters of the Moon are an extraordinary collection of lava cones, tubes, buttes, craters, caves, and splatter cones, all set in a bleak black otherworldly wasteland. The peregrine falcon, the state bird, flies across the landscape proudly.
