Moving to Georgia?
When you close your eyes and imagine the Deep South – a family gathered on a porch
enjoying ice tea; belles fluttering their fans provocatively; stiflingly hot nights
under a mesh screen – you’re most likely thinking of Georgia. Overwhelmingly rural,
the state is composed of slow, easygoing communities where traditional values still
hold sway and the famed hospitality never ends. Gone With the Wind, made seventy
years ago, evokes the gentle manners and subtle cadences perfectly, along with the
harsher aspects of life in the Peach State.
Spain was the first country to lay claim to this luscious region, in the late sixteenth
century. When the British pioneers had established their South Carolina colony,
they sought to expand south; in 1670 the fighting began and by 1700 the Carolinians,
with Yamasee assistance, had destroyed the Spanish coastal missions. The coast was
then occupied by the Indian allies until the Yamasee War of 1715-17, which involved
over twenty tribes, wiped out the indigenous population, clearing the way for the
outsiders to move in. When settlement began in Savannah in 1733, the Thirteenth
Colony was intended as a haven of Christian principles for poor Britons to establish
productive lives, and alcohol and slavery were banned. The need to attract settlers
established broad religious freedoms and under pressure from the planters, slavery
was introduced in 1752: by the time of the Civil War, nearly half the population
were slaves. A confederate stronghold, Georgia was the site of extensive military
action during the war. Union general William T. Sherman burned Atlanta and destroyed
a sixty-mile-wide path to the coast, where he captured Savannah in 1864.
Probably because of its repressive legislature, Georgia was an early centre for
the civil rights struggle. Already in the early 1900s, community leaders in Savannah
and Atlanta gathered to protest segregation on public transport. In 1915, the lynching
of Leo Frank, a Jew accused of murder, heralded the re-emergence of the Ku Klux
Klan. The Klan was strongly supported by a succession of Georgian politicians. By
the 1950s, the group was mainly composed of fanatics, who carried out hundreds of
attacks on African-Americans and white supporters of the civil rights movement.
Countering them was Dr Martin Luther King Jr, the leader whose strong but pacifist
speeches inspired millions to protest in favour of the movement.
Georgia now is increasingly industrial, and Atlanta is the centre of communications
and transportation in the southeast of America. Paper, board, tufted textiles and
processed chicken are all produced in greater quantities here than anywhere else
in the country. The agricultural sector is of course still very strong, in particular
the tobacco farms and the peach orchards that give the state its nickname. Twice
as many peanuts are grown here than in any other state and more than half the world’s
turpentine is extracted from the vast pine reserves.
The bustling city of Atlanta is a good place to start a visit to Georgia, filled
with Martin Luther King-related attractions as well as the 1996 Olympic stadiums,
a number of cultural institutions and an excellent aquarium. North of the city,
the Appalachian Mountains are spectacular, at their best in October. Central Georgia
has produced some wonderful musicians – James Brown and Otis Redding among them
– but the only place of interest is the town of Macon, where 280,000 cherry trees
bloom every spring and home of the Georgia Music Hall of Fame. Savannah is one of
the most beautiful towns in America, where every street provides a vision and the
moss-lined Spanish squares whisper centuries-old secrets. Stretching south from
it, the coast is full of beautiful surprises: secluded amidst the luxuriant plants
of the Okenfenokee Swamp are thousands of alligators, snakes, bears and even pumas;
while the islands off Brunswick (worth a visit just for the stew!) are inhabited
by wading birds and chilled out locals, perfect for a relaxing break.
Jimmy Carter, Julia Roberts, Sugar Ray Robinson – sometimes it seems as though the
people of Georgia just have to overwhelm you with their charm. Instead of resisting,
why not pull up an easy chair and join them? Life just got a whole lot friendlier…
