In 1513, seeking the mythical “Fountain of Youth”, the Spanish explorer Ponce de
León discovered and named Florida, claiming it for his country. Nearly five hundred
years later, the state is still associated with rejuvenating qualities and is famed
for its huge numbers of perma-tanned senior citizens. It’s also home to some of
the wildest parties in America: cosmopolitan Miami is legendary for its clubs as
well as its seedy underside, while every year hordes of overexcited students descend
on Daytona Beach, Panama City and the Florida Keys to drink excessively and dance
topless over Spring Break. In recent years it has been at the centre of controversy
in several presidential battles – George Bush is said to have stolen the 2000 election
with the assistance of his brother Governor Jeb Bush, while in 2008 there was bitter
argument over who should be allowed to vote at all. The clash of cultures is nothing
new - people have always fought over Florida…
When the conquistadores founded St Augustine in 1565, there were over twenty assorted
indigenous groups living in the region. The Spanish didn’t have time to worry about
them, however; the French Huguenots also laid claim to the land. They were put down
as quickly as possible but Francis Drake sacked the colony in 1586, precipitating
a conflict that would endure over two hundred years. By the time the Spain finally
ceded ownership to the US, most of the original tribes had been wiped out by disease.
Undeterred, the hardier Seminoles started several wars with the settlers, which
dragged on until 1842. Although the majority of the tribe was exiled to the Creek
Lands west of the Mississippi, several hundred who refused to leave retreated to
the Everglades, where their descendants still live
Admitted into the Union in 1845, Florida followed the lead of other Southern states
in establishing vast cotton plantations, using slaves to work them. The population
was tiny: in 1860 there were just over 140,000 people, of whom forty-four percent
were enslaved. The state seceded from the Union in 1861 to become a founding member
of the Confederacy. Twenty years after losing the Civil War, Floridians passed laws
that effectively disenfranchised black and poor white citizens. The population remained
small until the mid-twentieth century, not helped by the racial violence or the
boll weevil that devastated the cotton crops. After the Second World War, people
started to come south from the Rust Belt, attracted by the tropical climate (made
more bearable by the advent of air conditioning) and the low cost of living. Today,
Florida is the fourth most populous state, sustained by agriculture, manufacture
and tourism.
For many people the Sunshine State begins and ends by the water. The Florida Keys
are a chain of islands that run a hundred miles towards Cuba and are famed for their
laidback vibe, coral reefs and crystal waters. The Atlantic East Coast is where
immigrants arrive from Cuba and has a strong Latino feel to it, especially in Miami;
while the West Coast embraces all the extremes from Tampa Bay to murky swampland,
often within minutes of each other. The Everglades are the highlight of this area,
forming an eco-system that changes from bedrock in summer to marsh in winter. It
is easy to get lost and alligators abound! The flat countryside in between the coasts
was farming country until Walt Disney established Disneyworld in 1971, shooting
Florida to the forefront of international tourism. Inspired by this success, theme
parks connected to other movie studios sprang up around Orlando: it is possible
to spend weeks there without ever riding the same attraction twice. The poorest
area of the state is the northern Panhandle, where the Ku Klux Klan holds Sunday
picnics and there is an air of general neglect. The Apalachicola National Forest
is a wonderful place to disappear into the wilderness, however.
Optimistic yet divided, the Land of Flowers is one of the most fascinating, contradictory
