Moving to Delaware?
Tiny Delaware is best remembered for being the first state to join the Union, in
1787. Originally the home of the Unami Lenape and the Nanticoke, it was first settled
by Dutch traders, who set up an outpost at Zwannendael. Within a year, all the inhabitants
had been killed in a dispute with the local tribes. The Swedish were next to try,
in Fort Christina: their town was so successful that the Dutch captured it from
them in 1665, only to be evicted by the British nine years later. Co-opted by William
Penn to form part of his new territory, Delaware started to make its own decisions
in 1704, retaining the same governor as Pennsylvania but effectively autonomous.
Many colonial settlers came to Delaware from Maryland and Virginia, both of which
depended largely on tobacco production for their incomes. Improved conditions in
Britain led to a reduction in the number of immigrants, so the new Delawareans decided
that the employment of indentured labour was essential and began to import slaves
from Africa. However, at the end of the colonial period, Methodist and Quaker landowners
freed their slaves and encouraged their neighbours to do likewise. By 1810 more
than three quarters of the black citizens of Delaware had been freed and at the
outbreak of the Civil War this had risen to ninety percent. The largest slaveholder
owned only sixteen slaves, a tiny number compared to his counterparts in the South.
The state supported the Union: as its governor said, it had been the first to join
and would be the last to leave.
The boundary between Delaware and Maryland is called the Mason-Dixon Line, or the
Transpeninsular Line, and it symbolises the cultural boundary between the North
and the South. Just ninety-five miles long and thirty-five miles at its widest point,
the state sits on a level plain that is below sea level even in the “hills”. The
marshes house a surprising variety of wildlife, especially migratory birds attracted
by the warm climate. Bare trunked cypress tree also survive here, in one of their
most northerly habitats. The Delaware Coast is beautifully empty, other than in
Rehoboth Beach resort, which is packed in summer.
New Castle, the first state capital, is a friendly, well preserved town with immaculate
eighteenth-century houses shaded by ancient hardwood trees. The sumptuous George
II Read House is in fact a replica – the original burned down in 1824 – holding
marble fireplaces, elegant wood carvings and Federal style plasterwork, with spacious
gardens outside. Not far away, Dutch House is a seventeenth century home with original
fittings. Wilmington has the best museums, particularly the Delaware Art Museum
whose focus is eighteenth and nineteenth century American art. Old Swede Church
is one of the oldest places of worship in the country and there is a labyrinth in
its garden. Outside the city, the Brandywine Valley was the home of the Du Pont
family who established the state’s fortunes: their mansions offer a rare glimpse
into early colonial life. Delaware also hosts several intriguing sounding festivals,
including the Rehoboth Beach Chocolate Festival, the Apple Scrabble Festival, the
Nanticoke Indian Pow Wow and the disturbingly named World Championship Punkin Chunkin.
