Moving to Connecticut?

Connecticut – the second “c” is silent – was named Quinnehtukqut by the Native Americans for the great tidal river that splits it in two before spilling out into the Long Island Sound. This makes it sound much more dramatic than the reality of the modern state, which is home to large numbers of wealthy commuters, who like to escape the bustle of New York to come home to their idyllic olde-world villages and rolling green swathes of countryside. It took a while to get this perfect…

Traditional home of the Mohegan tribe, the area was first explored by Dutchman Adriaen Block, who explored the region in 1614. Traders set up a post called House of Hope at Dutch Point but their colonial ambitions were quickly squashed by settlers from English Massachusetts, who had broken with their own government. They adopted a constitution, “The Fundamental Agreement of the New Haven Colony”, in 1639, the first place in America to do so. This is still remembered in Connecticut’s nickname, “The Constitution State”. The boundaries of the new territory were fiercely disputed for nearly two hundred years, causing a number of bloody skirmishes, until it became the fifth state of the new United States of America in 1788.

During this period, Connecticut had become renowned as a centre of “Yankee ingenuity”; its people invented and marketed many useful household objects. The industrial revolution saw Connecticuters take their raw materials, abundant running water and navigable waterways, and transform their economy into a powerhouse. Between 1785 and 1910 the state issued more patents per capita than any other. Manufacturers played an important role in the Civil War, supplying the Union with munitions. Buoyed by a flood of unskilled labourers into the state, this remained the most prosperous industry until the Great Depression – after a brief slump it picked up again during the Second World War. At the end of the Cold War, the state moved its economy from manufacturing to entertainment, building vast casinos and cultural centres.

The capital, Hartford, is generally rather dull. However, it is the site of Mark Twain’s long term home, where Huckleberry Finn and several other works were written. The city’s pride and joy is the Greek Revival Wadsworth Atheneum, the nation's oldest continuously operating public art museum. Nearby New Haven is home to the great Yale University: the beautiful campus is the prime attraction. Foremost among the college buildings are the Sterling Memorial Library, which resembles a Gothic cathedral and the Beinecke Rare Books Library. Another pretty neighbourhood is the Italian District, where the restaurants are excellent and the nightlife exciting.

To the southeast is the coast, where picturesque colonial towns are juxtaposed with old whaling villages. Mystic Seaport is a reconstructed seventeenth century village where weathered old buildings house exquisitely carved scrimshaw and crafts made out of whales’ spermatozoa. The aquarium there has over 6,000 creatures and is a cut above the rest of its kind. Stonington Borough is immaculately pretty and has a Lighthouse museum. If it’s all getting too chocolate-boxey, head for the US Submarine Base at Groton.

Even the most seamless exterior has something to hide and Connecticut is no different. The richest state per capita has a rising drug problem and unemployment is also on the up. Nonetheless, it remains an embodiment of the American Dream, proof that with enough hard work and enterprise anything can be achieved.
