Half in the Rockies and half on the flats, Colorado is nevertheless the highest state in the US. All of it lies more than one thousand feet above sea level. This is the heartland of the ancient Pueblo peoples, also known as the Anasazi, who wandered North America, guided by spirits, until they settled in the Four Corners region around 1200 BC. They stayed in the region until around the thirteenth century, when a Little Ice Age appears to have forced them to decamp, leaving behind them countless pieces of pottery. Meanwhile, the Ute nation inhabited parts of the Rockies and the Cheyenne people hunted across the high plains.

The east and north of the state became part of the US with the Louisiana purchase of 1803, while the south was won from Mexico forty-five years later. It was not until the Pike’s Peak Gold Rush of 1858 that indigenous tribes were really threatened, when thousands of settlers came to what is now Denver to lay their claims. The gold in the rivers was quickly played out but the discovery of mineral reserves in the mountains established the importance of the area: the explorers were here to stay. The natives tried to fight back, and were briefly successful during the Civil War, but they were quickly overwhelmed. On August 1 1876, twenty years after the US centennial, Colorado was signed into being by President Ulysses E Grant, thus earning the nickname “The Centennial State”. Two years later a silver lode was discovered near Leadville, triggering the Colorado Silver Boom.

Colorado was the second state to grant women the vote, in 1893. This coincided with the collapse of the mining and agricultural industries. From being a wealthy frontier state, it became one of the poorer areas in the US, not helped by the Great Depression or the Dust Bowl of the 30s, when severe dust storms destroyed crops. After the Second World War, there was an upsurge in tourism, from which Coloradans benefited enormously. Today this and other service industries are the main source of income.

Over a thousand mountains in the Rockies are over 10,000 feet tall and more than one hundred exceed 13,000 feet. Conifers and aspens grow up the mountains to the tree line. The Rocky Mountain National Park is home to the Rocky Mountain goat, the official state animal, Longs Peak, Bear Lake and Wild Basin. All are popular hiking destinations. The Continental Divide passes through Colorado: one of the best places to view it is at Idaho Springs. The other great attraction is the winter sports scene – resorts such as Vail and Aspen are world-famous and attract skiers and boarders from every part of the globe.

Local celebrities include Roseanne Barr, Clive Cussler, President Dwight David Eisenhower, Hunter S Thompson and John Denver. More recently, Colorado has become notorious as the home of South Park, the darkly humorous cartoon series about four little boys from the mountains that was created by locals Trey Parker and Matt Stone.
