Moving to Arkansas?
Arkansas – why is it pronounced “Arkensaw”? That was in fact the original name,
which means “land of downriver people” and originates from the indigenous Quapaw
tribe. When the territory became the twenty-fifth US state in 1836, both names were
used. After a dispute between two state senators in 1861, the official pronunciation
became part of state legislature.
Although first visited by the Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto in the mid-sixteenth
century, it was not until 1686 that a French colony was established. The first permanent
European settlement was at Arkansas Post, which remained the state capital until
1836 when it was moved to Little Rock. During the Indians’ forced move westward,
the Five Civilised Tribes – the Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek and Seminole
– inhabited the area after they were driven across the Mississippi river, until
they were moved on again in the 1820s. This was when the cotton plantations began
to flourish in the lands of the Mississippi Delta – slave labour was used extensively
in the region. Despite this dependence, Arkansas refused to join the Confederacy,
only doing so when President Lincoln called on the state to support the Union with
troops.
The years following the defeat in the Civil War saw large migration to the Delta,
with especially high numbers of Italian, Syrian and Chinese immigrants coming to
seek their fortune in the late nineteenth century. They were followed by a wave
of Germans and Slovaks, who settled the prairies in the early twentieth century.
The hotchpotch of cultures notwithstanding, the state remained conservative and
there was widespread shock when in 1957 a group of African-American students known
as the Little Rock Nine enrolled in a white school. The school board resisted their
attempt until President Eisenhower intervened on their behalf, sending US Army troops
to escort the students to school. Today, the state retains traditional values as
part of the Bible Belt.
With the subtropical Delta in the east, the Ozarks in the northwest and the Buffalo
river running through the north, it’s obvious why this is known as the Natural State.
The Ozarks are the largest mountain range between the Rockies and the Appalachians,
home to the Hot Springs National Park and Blanchard Spring Caverns, as well as offering
some of the most forests and mountain scenery in the country the state tree is the
pine, and the state insect is the honeybee. Food production, the lumber trade and
farming are the main sources of income for the three million people of Arkansas,
who live predominantly in rural areas. It is the only place in the US where diamonds
are still mined; Murfreesboro is a tourist attraction as well as an operating mine.
Although Johnny Cash is more commonly associated with Nashville, he was born and
raised in Arkansas; so too were Maya Angelou, Beth Ditto, Winthrop Rockefeller,
and Billy Bob Thornton. The most famous and probably the most charming person to
have emerged from the state, however, has to be former president Bill Clinton. Regnat
populus – the people rule.
