Arizona is the stuff of legends, one of the Four Corners desert states that stretch
from Texas to California across endless miles of red stone. The mother of all gorges,
the Grand Canyon, is in this state, along with the awesome thousand foot cliffs
of the Canyon de Chelley, where the adobe dwellings and cave paintings of the Pueblo
tribe can still be seen. Add to that the Petrified Forest, which houses the largest
collection of petrified wood in the world as well as examples of ancient rock art,
and the reconstructed London Bridge, brought here in 1968, and you have a truly
spectacular state. Even the capital, Phoenix, has an exotic name.
The Hopi and Navajo tribes lived in this region for hundreds of years before the
arrival of the Europeans in 1540. The first settlers were Spanish missionaries,
who tried to bring Christianity to the “Indians”; they were followed by traders
and farmers who built fortified towns at Tubac in 1752 and Tucson in 1775. When
Mexico became independent of Spain in 1821, Arizona went with it, forming part of
the Nuevo California colony. Taken over by the Americans in 1847, the colony was
valued at $15 million, a colossal sum that nearly bankrupted the US. In 1861 southern
New Mexico seceded from the union to become the Confederate Territory of Arizona.
When the Chiricahua Reservation was abolished in 1876 and the Apache tribe forcibly
removed to other lands, Chief Geronimo began a guerrilla war against the frontiersmen,
leading raids in Arizona and the Mexican state of Sonora until he was forced to
surrender in 1886. He later became a celebrity, appearing in Theodore Roosevelt’s
inaugural procession and dictating his autobiography to S.M. Barrett. Several of
the myths of the Wild West actually originate around this time: Wyatt Earp fought
the Clanton gang in the infamous OK Corral gun battle in Tombstone in 1861 (this
is re-enacted in a raucous festival every October); and the gold rush of the 1890s
created the famously lawless two horse towns, with their dusty streets, saloon bars
and shoot outs.
The Grand Canyon state is still home to fourteen Native American tribes, who are
spread around twenty reservations. The arid Black Mesas have become a celebrated
tourist attraction, where it is possible to observe members of the Hopi tribe dry-farming.
More astonishing is Monument Valley, the stronghold of Navajo culture, where twisting
pinnacles of rock and sandstone monoliths dominate the skyline. This is where John
Wayne became a star: it’s also an important spiritual centre and photography is
not encouraged.
Today, the Wild West is gone and the main industry is manufacturing: the most important
businesses are electronics, communications and aeronautics. Agriculture is also
crucial, with cattle and cotton the lynchpins of the farming industry. Six and a
half million Arizonans produce $200 billion a year, making it the 61st biggest economy
in the world. This is the home state of Senator John McCain, Justice Sandra Day
O’Connor and Barry Goldwater – as well as Steven Spielberg, Wonder Woman Linda Carter
and Fleetwood Mac. Arizona: the contradictions are endless.
